Picked up a couple of Heltec V3 LoRa devices for use with Meshtastic firmware.

The units come unassembled – which is not hard to put together but there are no instructions.

Flashed the Meshtastic firmware from meshtastic.org’s online flasher tool.

Tried to connect to the device from the phone’s Bluetooth – but the device never shows up on the Bluetooth scan – whether from the phone’s Settings or from the Meshtastic app.

Was able to connect to it via a USB cable between the phone and the Heltec and that works. But no go on Bluetooth, which makes the system somewhat unwieldy for general use.

On the bright side, I left the unit on my office desk and over a few hours, it reported hearing 87 other Meshtastic nodes – which is pretty cool since I live in a small town that is fairly isolated.

Looking online, I see A TON of posts that the Heltec’s Bluetooth implementation has been problematic since late 2025 – seems like it still does not work as many report similar problems to mine.

Guess the next question is – should I buy a different LoRa product and try that instead?
