For comparison, I walked about 3/4 mile to elementary school (no bus service), and about 1 mile to high school. As I got older (probably 4th grade), I began riding my bike to school. In high school, about age 16, I took a summer school chemistry course at another high school – and rode my bike six miles each way to get to that school.

Surprisingly, contrary to popular viewpoints, crime is, overall, less than it was when I was younger. But a combination of context free (no history) news coverage, a focus on doomerism and scary stories, has us all believe that today is more dangerous than the past – and parents are expected to keep tight control over their kids.
