Apple has had Air Tags for some time, and Samsung has it’s Smart Tags. Both are small devices that are detectable by Apple iPhones (for Air Tags) or Samsung phones (for Smart Tags) and can be used to locate missing or stolen items.

Google announced in May that it would finally introduce a similar feature for all Android phones, but so far, has delayed the roll out.

I use the Samsung Smart Tags and they do work when detected by a nearby Samsung phone. For many activities, like popular tourist destination traveling, there are enough Samsung phones in the world to find your Smart Tags. But in less traveled locations, the density of Samsung phones is lower and you might not get a hit, or at least a nearby hit. Once detection is rolled out to all Android phones, eventually, then the detection network will be quite dense, as it is for Apple iPhones.

In mid-October, Samsung is lowering the price of individual Smart Tags to $30. At that price, it becomes cheap insurance to put one in your car, your camera bag, your luggage and so on – such that if they go missing, there is a good chance you’ll be able to find them.
