I have updated this post with new information – about 1 in 4 US STEM workers were born abroad. In the Seattle area, over 40% were born abroad and over 50% of software engineers were born abroad. In Silicon Valley, it is over 70%. Consequently, it seems likely (follow the links below) that 40-50% of the STEM workforce, and certainly the software specialty area, has international experience by virtue of having been born abroad, studied abroad, lived or worked abroad at some point in their life.
