Until around 1900, child mortality was high. In the 20th century, many public health improvements reduce that mortality. The fertility rate was dropping rapidly after 1959, but the widespread availability of the “birth control pill” in the late 1960s and early 1970s, accelerated that trend. Further, we saw a sharp reduction in teen births as well.
