Many districts are just now starting to close schools, some starting to layoff staff. Many districts used Covid-era Federal money to expand their staff numbers – even as they were losing enrollment.

A big driver of the enrollment drop is the decline in fertility rates – there are no longer as many kids in the pipeline. Some districts are discussing closing and merging schools – but seem to be oblivious to the long term trend. These are not going to be a one time set of closures and layoffs – but will likely need to continue for years into the future.
