The numbers suggest Oregon is still appealing to many new arrivals, but that may not be enough to overcome the state’s demographic headwinds.”
Oregon has the 3rd lowest birth rate in the nation, and 100% of population growth since 2020 is attributed to foreign born immigrants. Without foreign born immigrants, Oregon’s population would be declining.
Tax issues, including a high estate tax that starts low, has resulted in some of the “baby boom” – now around retirement – to leave the state. In September, Oregon will publish its formal Universal Health Plan proposal – which appears to be strongly negative for the 900,000 residents on Medicare – may drive even more to leave the state.
