This is down from 75% in 2010. The public has lost confidence in college programs at a time, also, when the incoming next generation cohort is smaller than the past (due to the lower fertility rate today). It’s not clear that colleges understand the problem (inflicted by themselves, to a large extent) nor have a plan or the means to fix the problems. A lot of colleges will be closing over the next 5-10 years, especially ones.

Gallup: Perceived Importance of College Hits New Low

One of my state’s public universities has lost half of its enrollment, will run out of funding in mid-2027 and has announced that if they cannot put together a turn around plan, they will shut down. Small private colleges – with enrollments in the low 1000s – are in a real tough situation and many are expected to close over the next 5 years.
