Average tuition is dropping because of shrinking supply: Demographics, Education: More colleges closing – Coldstreams
About 1970 onward was an unusual period of (a) huge increase in youth population, putting increasing demand on colleges, and (b) the push that everyone should go to college.
Today we have an excess supply of college graduates – half of college graduates are working in jobs that do not require a college degree. The degree has long been used a “filter” to quickly filter a large number of job applicants for every job.
Today, the fertility rate has collapsed, the leading edge of the shrinking youth cohort is just in to their college years, causing a -15% decline in enrollment since 2010, and an expected additional -15% decline by 2030. The drop is stunning.
