Harvard Finds More Instances of ‘Duplicative Language’ in President’s Work

Note that when I use a linked article’s own title, I put it in quotes, as above. The direct link is the citation.

I’ve taught university courses and I have caught students plagiarizing. A small number of misplaced quotes was not a big deal, but repeatedly copying the work of others without attribution was taken seriously and resulted in students receiving zero points on the assignment. By university policy, it could result in an F in the course or expulsion from the campus. The expectations for proper citation were more lenient for undergraduates – graduate students were held to a higher standard. The Harvard President appears to have plagiarized in her PhD thesis and in published papers. Some of the sections presented are probably not terrible – other than demonstrating a sloppiness that someone of her positions should not be doing – but there are other sections that appear to be serious plagiarism.

Harvard University has created its own mess, and it is unclear how they will resolve the controversy.

The past 4 years have been devastating to trust and confidence in institutions we used to give a pass too – like public health, science and academics.

Update: Plagiarism: Harvard cleared Claudine Gay THEN investigated (nypost.com).
