Source: How many more warning signs does Mark Zuckerberg need to see before he pulls the plug on his metaverse?

  • Few people want to wear a VR helmet
  • Fewer people want to wear a VR helmet all day
  • VR helmets might someday be replaced with lighter and better solutions, but still have difficult interaction with real-world UI devices (like keyboards, controllers)
  • VR helmets are expensive
  • Many VR helmets work awkwardly or poorly for people who need to wear vision correcting eyeglasses; many people are not eligible for contact lenses as an alternative, either.
  • Most users of Meta’s VR worlds give up after as little as a month

There are effective uses for VR – notably CAD design system and gaming. But is there a mass market of people wanting to spend a lot of money on VR helmets and then wear them for hours or even all day?

There will be many improvements in the technology – but it remains unclear whether there is a huge market for all this.
