Resident of a seaside community has a couple show up on her doorstep, thinking they had rented her home for a vacation getaway.
The couple was scammed: Perpetrators posted fake rental listings on Craigslist, grabbing property descriptions and property photos from Zillow, then signing fake rental agreements and having funds wired to offshore accounts where the money vanishes.
This homeowner discovered this is going on every day to numerous homes in her community. Craigslist does not seem to care.
As a general rule, every web service that relies on user generated content is filled with fraud and scams. This includes fake product and fake reviews on Amazon, to disinformation on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit.
