Yesterday, I used Opencore Legacy Patcher to update my old 2015 Macbook Pro to MacOS Sequoia. The system was still running Big Sur, which due to Apple’s planned obsolescence, was the last supported version of MacOS.
Due to some issues, I ended up doing a Time Machine backup, then starting from scratch – erasing the SSD, re-installing MacOS Big Sur, and then doing the patches and update to Sequoia, followed by restoring files from the Time Machine backup.
Unfortunately, all the restored files were tagged as being owned by the prior me and not the current me! Every time I wanted to edit a file, or delete a file, I had to enter an administrator password. Every time!
I added myself with read/write access to the files but MacOS still insisted on a password for write access.
I came up with a simple solution – I copied all the restored files from the MacOS SSD to a Windows file system formatted USB SSD drive – which caused it to lose the file ownership and permissions info. Then copied all the files back – where they are all now properly owned by me.
No more passwords required!
