Despite the headline and scary first paragraph this ends up being a decent article on measles:
Measles outbreaks: What to know about vaccinations, boosters, babies, and travel.
If you had measles as a kid or you have been vaccinated, you can ignore the media fear mongering about measles.
While measles is highly infectious, the often mentioned R-0 of 18 only applies to an immune naive population. In our population where 93% have been vaccinated, and possibly another 1-2% have immunity also from having had the disease previously, the R-0 is probably more like 2.
I had measles as a child (before a vaccine was available). While many young were later vaccinated, even if they’d had measles, that did not happen for me. A titer test a few years ago showed I had previously had measles, mumps and chicken pox – but not rubella (the R in the MMR vaccine). I received a single dose of the MMR vaccine.
If you’ve had measles or you have been vaccinated, you can safely ignore the media hysteria over measles – which seems to have adopted the Covid playbook.
