Every day I see social media posts about farmland being converted to solar farms – and this is awful.
By the data, however, about 40 acres of farmland is converted to development, housing and industrial uses every hour.
By comparison, about 11 acres of farmland is converted to solar PV farms and much of this is the arid west where the land is used for animal grazing, not growing human food crops.
Land converted to solar is considered “reversible” (could be converted back or dual use as agriculture) where land converted to housing or retail strip malls or factories is considered a permanent conversion.
