This is a popular meme on X. It’s also bull shit.

They’ve confounded two unrelated variables.

The marriage rate by age 30 is half what it was in 1950 due to cultural changes, co-habiting considered okay today, vastly more young people attending college, delaying marriage, etc. This value is then multiplied by the home ownership rate by age 30 – literally cutting that figure in half. (Not shown by 2020 was 35%).

But there is more!

The homeownership rate by age 30 also went down – because instead of going to directly into work at age 18-21, people went to college, got employed at older ages, and then delayed marriage. In the 1950s-1960s, those buying homes by age 30 had up to ten years of accumulated earnings already – while today, many that age have accumulated debts and did not have stable employment until age 25-28.

This accounts for most of the drop in home ownership by age 30.

Then, multiply that by the unrelated marriage rate – and you cut that figure in half, again.

This is a great example of how doomers in the media and social media persuade you to believe things that are not true.
