In the past several weeks, some social media has seen a flood of generation hate posting.

The general gist is that housing prices are high and it is very difficult for many in Gen Z to consider purchasing a home. This is true.

Home price inflation has shot up sharply since 2020, likely due to government policies surrounding Covid that created both inflation and a potential shortage of housing units. Additionally, the US built fewer homes since the 2008-2010 Great Recession. The housing problem is a legitimate issue in several regions of the U.S.

You can see the longer-term average increase in the black line – but the median/average prices have shot up well above the long running average.

The issues over housing, however, have devolved into generation bashing and see many making claims that are provably false.

Over the next two months there will be a lot of posts – based on data – comparing the Boomer generation with Gen Z. And which will show that many of the claims are completely false.

The generation bashing, I believe, is not “organic” and “from the people”. The new mayors of NYC and Seattle have participated in painting Gen Z as victims of oppression and the Boomer generation as having it easy. This helps create a class of voters (Gen Z) that would then support socialism policies (higher taxes, free services like buses, government run retail stores, rent and other price controls).

Thus, the generation bashing might be a political propaganda campaign to create support for the above agenda. They need to portray Gen Z as victims – but vote for us and we will solve your problems.

I have data-backed posts on these topics, pre-written and scheduled for posting out to early January. This series will likely extend out even beyond that time frame.
