- Oregon has just passed legislation for mandatory by-the-mile fees for electric vehicles, turning the entire state’s road system into a toll highway for all EV drivers (EXCEPT OUT OF STATE DRIVERS).
- EV owners in Oregon already pay a registration fee twice that of gas vehicles.
- The state is also adding an additional annual registration fee for electric vehicles.

We live in Oregon. We own an EV.
We received advice from a CPA and two estate planning attorneys: Oregon is one of the highest taxed states in the US and has the most aggressive estate tax. Most US states no longer have estate or inheritance taxes.
Having run the numbers, it makes no sense for us to remain in Oregon. With Oregon politicians increasing taxes and fees even more, it makes no sense for us to stay in Oregon.
We do not have a time frame – but plan to start visiting optional destinations starting within a month. We have ruled out a couple of out of state options and have possibly narrowed down the choices.
Oregon is aware of the problems – in February of 2025, Democrats proposed reviewing the state’s estate tax system to make it competitive with other states. But that proposal went nowhere.
They are aware that when many Oregon residents reach about age 55, they start thinking about retirement, and retirement financial planning – and quickly see Oregon’s aggressive estate tax – and then make plans to retire out of state. It’s become a losing proposition for the state.
