Few people are vegetarian – most of those who start eating that way eventually give it up: Why are so many young people giving up on being vegetarian or vegan? | The Standard

The author thinks vegetarian eating will control the earth’s climate. He missed the memo that 20-30% of all meat is consumed by pet dogs and cats – and we need to ban all pets too, if he believes that.

But it’s not eating meat that causes greenhouse gases – it is that ruminants merely exist.

Ruminant animals (including deer, etc) emit methane from their stomachs. Methane is seen as a greenhouse gas. In order to reduce this source of methane we need to kill off ruminant animals. They produce methane just by existing. Thus, we must largely eliminate entire species of animals … thus, vegetarians and vegans who care about animals end up killing off entire species.

Per Gallop survey in 2023, 4% of the US population says they are vegetarian, down from 6% about two decades earlier. Vegans are 1%, down from 2%. Other surveys find similar small percentages, and a couple of studies found about half of those calling themselves vegetarian, eat fish and/or meat from time to time, some surprisingly frequently.

Vegetarian/vegan eating is not a big market. This is why we see local business news stories from time to time about vegetarian- or vegan-focused restaurants going out of business. Sometimes, they expand their offerings to include meat dishes in addition to their vegetarian/vegan offerings. But then the vegetarian/vegan community organizes protests – and the restaurants end up going out of business. Make it make sense.

Conversely, in July we traveled across the country – most restaurants serve primarily high fat, fried foods – with big offerings of sugar laden sodas, milkshakes and deserts. It is very hard to eat a decent whole foods diet when traveling. One exception is Subway – where you can get some decent food, or even a salad bowl (not shown on their in-store menu though – but available if you ask). When it comes to eating, most restaurants in the U.S. are pretty awful. Vegan/vegetarian swings hard to one side, while most other restaurants serve up the same bland, high calorie fried foods.

Vegetarianism/Veganism among some practitioners has the hallmarks of an evangelical religious cult, unfortunately.

As I’ve written elsewhere, why can’t people be generally free to eat in ways that work best for themselves?
