Prominent Washington Doctor Dies Trying To Hike Rim Of Grand Canyon – Wide Open Spaces

74 year old doctor, avid runner and hiker, dies of cardiac arrest hiking in Grand Canyon NP: “He was really into health and nutrition, and what diets are the right ones to take, and what supplements. I mean, the guy was crazy about staying healthy.”

He did everything right but still got hit with heart disease. He’d previously run from rim to rim of the Canyon – three times, run up Mt Whitney, and hiked to the top of Mt Rainier. Unfortunately, genetics and randomness may play much larger roles than controllable factors like fitness and diet. We should strive to be fit and healthy, but ultimately, what we can do may be significantly overshadowed by factors outside our control.

Sad story. Dr Smith was a very cool guy – what a loss.
