While many view EVs as “zero emission” vehicles, most people charge their vehicles using a mix of power sources. You can see the estimated emissions for your vehicle (and others) using this government web site tool: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?year=2023&vehicleId=46207&zipCode=80216&action=bt3
And enter EV vehicle type and zip code.
We initially installed solar PV on our home, many years ago – since our utility was then, about 70+% fossil fuel powered electricity generation (most of which was from coal). Years later we added an EV – which is now recharged from our existing solar PV for all local and regional driving. Today, our utility has dropped most of their coal power plants and greatly reduced their carbon emissions – this is why it can be difficult to know if, given your individual situation, is solar PV or an EV or both useful options for you? We are fortunate that we live in a high desert environment with – usually – a lot of sunlight. Not everyone has that and solar PV may not make sense for those lacking good annual sunlight.
