News to me: Adults don’t need tetanus, diphtheria boosters if fully vaccinated as children, study finds | OHSU News

WHO has dropped the ten-year booster shot recommendation while the CDC still recommends the booster shot.

If we plebians are confused by the dueling experts, we are often labeled stupid by the celebrity public health experts on social media. We should, they say, listen to “the experts”.

I had a booster 3 weeks ago (last shot was 11 years ago). 11 years ago my health care provider was pretty emphatic on the need to get a booster shot. Further, in my 20s, I stepped on a board with a nail poking up – outside, in the dirt, and put a nail through my foot. I also came down hard on a broken piece of glass while plunging down a sand dune, lacerating my foot.

But 3 weeks ago, I now realize my own doctor was saying that at this point, I’m not at high risk and a booster is probably no longer needed. He was correct but my brain was stuck on the old messaging around boosters. I probably should have skipped this booster – fortunately, there did not appear to be any subsequent harms other than a few days feeling tired. I’m fine now.
