The U.S. fertility rate hit 1.6 in 2023 and has been falling for a very long time. At the present time, the U.S. population would not be growing except for inbound immigration. By 2040, 100% of U.S. population growth will come from immigration (per US Census estimates). Eventually, the population may start to shrink.
This has challenging ramifications for our future – our economic systems have generally depended on population growth. Promises of future government benefit programs have relied on population growth. With the decline in births, we are now seeing closures of schools throughout much of the U.S. How will the U.S. fund many existing programs amid a declining number of taxpayers?
