iPadOS 18 disaster — Bricked iPads force Apple to pause major update

A long ago Apple software update bricked my original iPad 2 device. Apple didn’t care. There were lots of posts online.

This is one of several reasons I no long buy Apple products. The other was rapidly discontinuing product support for computers. I once had a Macbook whose OS update support ended in 3.5 years. My Macbook Pro, which has very impressive hardware, had OS update support ended at 5 years. It’s a beast of a hardware system – but can’t be updated past Mac OS X 11.7 and thus, is unable to install the latest software updates which all now require 12.0 or newer (including Microsoft Office).

Repair, re-use, recycle is a good mantra for the environment – but not at Apple. IF you purchase a new Apple computer, you can submit your old device to Apple to have it recycled – but only if you buy a new system.

Meanwhile, I’m still using a 2012 quad core HP computer with Windows 10 and all the latest software. Yes, updates will end soon – but I’m at 12 years on that system – not 3.5 to 5 years. I keep that system since I use an outstanding, state of the art film scanner that is probably 18-12 years old and works fantastic – as good as the newest scanners, if not better in some ways – but the scanner vendor did not provide drivers for Windows 11. But it still runs fantastic on Windows 10.

I was also able to update a slightly newer PC platform with an end user installable TPM security chip – and that older hardware is up to date on Windows 11.

Hardware and software longevity can be very helpful.
