But forecasts from demographers at Portland State University had projected that 20 of Portland Public Schools’ elementary schools will have 300 or fewer students this school year – almost half of its 45 K-5 schools.

The parents fighting the school closures suggest realigning school boundaries, but seemed unaware of the declining in young people, due to low birth rates, as the root cause.

Oregon’s fertility rate is 1.39, the 2nd lowest in the United States.
