This study confuses “liberal” as “progressive”. One can be liberal without being progressive – they are not the same thing.
I once read a commentary by a university researcher who looked into these studies. He concluded the general intelligence of left and right was about the same. The main difference, he said, was that liberals were more likely to tell you they are smarter.
