Public health: Vaccine versus natural immunity

I never understood how there could be vaccine immunity without natural immunity. Your immune system either works or it does not work:

This does not mean you should avoid a vaccine and get a disease – just that the argument that there was only vaccine immunity and no natural immunity made no sense at all – and was a turn off to believing public health after that.
