This article is from a content mill web site so it may be questionable: Veterinarians in High Demand: Top States Facing Shortages

Left out of the story: Gender and veterinary medicine – PMC (nih.gov) – for more than a decade, about 80% of veterinary medical students are female, and today, about 70% of all veterinarians are female: Most veterinarians are women, but they still face sexism in rural areas where they’re most needed | KCUR – Kansas City news and NPR

We hear frequently about lack of female representation in STEM, but they really mean TE, not S and M. Many “S” fields, particularly in health sciences, are overwhelmingly dominated by women today.

We have much media and activist attention and programs in schools to encourage girls and women to go into “STEM”. And per the NSF, using their full set of “STEM” fields, women are just over 50% of those receiving degrees in STEM.

There are many fields with wild gender imbalances. For example, 89% of nurses are female, 70% of physical therapists are female, and about 89% of K-5 teachers are female.

But there are zero programs to encourage men to go into fields dominated by women. All of the emphasis is one way – encouraging girls and women to go in to “Tech” and “Engineering”.

Worse, since the early 1980s, more women than men graduate from college, and the ratio is becoming more lopsided.

To the extent we need more nurses, or veterinarians, we need programs to expand interest in these fields to more than half of the population.
