In the U.S. students are required to take “general education” or “core” requirements – and 4 years or more becomes the standard duration of an undergraduate degree.

In much of Europe and the world, the Bachelor’s degree is a 3 year degree. The difference is those programs do not have the “general education” requirement and move students directly into studying their major subject courses.

With the demand for global thinking and international skills, it may make sense for some U.S. students to consider doing their degree in another country – 3 years instead of 4 may mean it doesn’t cost as much as one might expect, and in a few countries, tuition is low or even free.
