Instead of growing meat on the range, we should convert coal into protein using the process described, and stop using range land. All of our future food should come mostly from factories…

This is one of the reasons the meat-heavy Western diet is under fire as environmentally unsustainable; growing plants to feed animals makes wretchedly inefficient use of land, which could otherwise be left as forest or used for other purposes.

The author seems not to understand that soil type, geology and local climate play a huge role in what grows. The dry, barren grasslands of the western U.S. – or his country Australia – will not magically turn into forest and will likely become more barren once they are no longer used for ranching.
