They spent almost $1,000 per month on electricity and fuel for their two cars? That is insane.

Opinion: Greening our Northern California home and cars cut our energy bills by $11,000 a year. But it wasn’t easy (msn.com)

Before we installed our solar PV, I think our monthly total energy costs were never more than $200 to $300 in the worst months of the year. How were they spending $11,000/year on energy? That is crazy.

I have not calculated out what we spend now but all our local driving is now an EV recharged from our own solar PV. Our heat comes (mostly) from our locally sourced wood pellets – which now average about $700 per year (not per month!). Our electricity bill is $10/month (the fee we pay for a grid intertie as local building code mandates all residential solar PV installation also be tied to the utility grid). We still have a gas car but total gas bills are running may be $10-$15/month.

Again, how were they paying $11,00 per year? Anyone?
