Once again, we give far, far too much credence to expert forecasts of the future – most forecasts turn out to be wrong. Go back and review the Covid disease models or the expert pronouncements of “superspreader events” that didn’t happen.
A large part of the problem is that sometimes, experts are aware of uncertainty, and they may or may not mention that uncertainty. But worse, reporters rarely mention the uncertainty – what starts as a “possibility” rather than a prediction, is translated by the media into “this is going to happen”.
