DETROIT (AP) — U.S. auto safety regulators say they have taken the first step toward requiring devices in vehicles that prevent drunk or impaired driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Tuesday that it is starting the process to put a new federal safety standard in place requiring the technology in all new passenger vehicles.

They would require all drivers to blow into a tube to have a breath analysis done before they can start the car. Since I do not drink, and never have, this would be quite a bother to have in my vehicles. Will it stop drunk drivers? Maybe. Will it stop driver high on marijuana or other drugs? Probably not. Will each test result be logged in the vehicle or a government database? Probably.

Look at all the high tech safety features mandated for cars sold in Europe in a few years: Europe mandates new car safety tech for 2022 (motoringresearch.com):

  • For cars, vans, trucks and buses: driver drowsiness and distraction warnings, intelligent speed assistance, reversing safety with camera or sensors, ‘black box’ data recorders in the event of an accident.
  • For cars and vans: lane-keeping assistance, advanced emergency braking, crash-test improved safety belts.

Some states, like Oregon, would like to mandate tax by the mile programs, which would require tracking all of your travels. Is this the future we want?
