A survey published in January shows about one-third of adult Americans think they can safely land an airliner with the help of air traffic control.

One-third of Americans think they can safely land a plane in an emergency, survey says (qcnews.com)

I doubt 1 in 3 could do that. I have a PPL but would still find it challenging. Landing an aircraft requires a lot of steps to simultaneously be right: right power, right angle of descent, right power settings, trim, flaps and being at the right attitude at the right speed – and then throw in cross winds! And then what comes after landing as you speed down the runway after touch down. Could it be done? Possibly. By 1 in 3 adults – doubtful.
