Can you spot the problem with this comparison?

According to data from Cox Automotive, parent of Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for electric cars was $53,469 in July 2023, vs. gas-powered vehicles at $48,334.

The problem: this compares the average EV, which is generally a small to mid-size car, with the average ICE vehicle, which is generally an SUV or pickup truck. 78% of vehicles sold in the U.S. qualify as SUVs or pickups.

The typical EV has a payload of around 1,000 pounds while the typical SUV/pickup has a payload of around 3,000 pounds.

They are comparing completely different things – it would be as if we compared the average price of condos to the average price of detached homes on large lots. The “units” are not the same.

Thus the simple price comparison is meaningless and frankly, stupid.

Note – I’m not anti-EV. I drive an EV.
