California Bans Gas Generators Sales in 2028 and Appliances in 2030 | NextBigFuture.com

California has banned the sale of generators that have any emissions, beginning in 2028. Consumers may still purchase them in another state and bring them back to California.

This means generators for RVs and other remote applications, presumably including those used in the field by agriculture – which may not have viable alternative options being distant from power lines and the high costs of large capacity batteries and solar PV for remote, high power, intermittent operations. Unclear what is happening for those applications.

If your gas water heater or gas furnace fails after 2030, you will not be able to replace it – instead, you may have to add 220v electrical lines to your water heater and furnace location, possibly requiring a upgrade to your electrical panel. The cost of the upgrades can run to many thousands of dollars – and that’s before you purchase the new water heater, electric furnace or heat pump.
