Ouch:

As Karikó worked for decades toward adapting mRNA to bring out its therapeutic qualities, her efforts were repeatedly dismissed by the university, she has said. When she was unable to find funding, Penn demoted her, taking her off the track to full professorship.

Philly scientist behind COVID vaccine tech was demoted by UPenn, yet she persisted (billypenn.com)

Nature and Science both rejected her paper on mRNA:

Their key finding of a chemical modification of mRNA to render it non-immunogenic was rejected by the journals Nature and Science but eventually accepted by the publication Immunity.

Her work led to the development of the mRNA vaccine technology developed by BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna.

This week, she was co-awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (with her research partner David Weissman).

I guess we should keep this mind when someone says “The science is settled”, and “Trust Science” – that work like the above was, at one time, rejected by those that should have known better.
