In the aftermath of a disaster, it is common for there to be many missing people who have not notified anyone of their location.
After the Lahaina fire disaster, over 1,000 were missing. Some media stories suggested the number of deaths might rise to hundreds of dead.
The actual death count peaked at 115, but was then reduced to 97, because some remains were counted more than once, due to their destruction in the fire.
