I grew up in Northern California back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth (slightly exaggerating) – back then, fire breaks were cut across local hillsides and mountains every year. When I have visited California in recent years, I’ve not seen any of these original fire breaks. Did the old fire breaks not work, so they were discontinued? Or was it a cost or environmental issue concern? I don’t know.
