E-bike lithium-ion batteries are exploding in New York (interestingengineering.com)

NYC has – half way into 2023 – reported 13 fatalities from battery fires, more than twice the number occurring in all of 2022.

This needs to get fixed.

I have 220 v outlets both inside my garage and one outside. Am thinking that future EV charging will be done outside, when possible.

Similarly, my RC model aircraft batteries may need to be charged differently – after learning of some recent RC battery fires reported in my online RC groups, including a fire that destroyed a building. Many now urge no charging inside and if you need to, put the batteries inside an old metal ammo can for safety. Some say “fireproof” battery bags sold in the RC community are effective for a few minutes of protection but after that, can lead to major fires.

I was (mostly) charging in my garage but with the battery and charger on the concrete floor, away from everything flammable. I sometimes charged drone batteries in my house but am thinking I should no longer do that.

There is a problem with Lithium battery charging, resulting in burned up vehicles, homes and other structures. This is no joke. In one of my other posts, a Norwegian ferry operator has banned the carriage of EVs on board. EV advocates argue this it not a big deal, often pointing to the # of ICE vehicles that catch fire – but leave out that most of those occur in crashes, not spontaneous combustion in your garage.
