One trick to boost your chances of getting into an elite college? Be rich. – MarketWatch
The universities loudly bemoaning inequality in society are among the primary drivers of inequality:
“This proves the point that the Ivy League is reinforcing inequality in our society by driving more and more wealthy people into positions of power and only further exacerbating the wealth inequality at play in our society,”
Ouch.
Coming from wealth and being involved in high school sports are two significant factors in admission, they say.
High school age sports activities today can be expensive with many school programs requiring payment of sports participation fees and travel expenses for some away games. This may limit who can participate in sports. Note that some “high school” sports are through the school (with fees) but some, like soccer or swimming, may be done in private after school leagues – which are not cheap!
Those from wealthy backgrounds likely did not have to work part time while in school, to eventually pay for their college education.
I worked part time throughout high school as I had to pay 100% of my own college tuition. Involvement in sports was not an option. I attended a public state college.
