The American Academy of Pediatrics says kids should not be allowed to walk to school by themselves until age 10.

Children aged under 10 years should be accompanied by an adult, who should give active and ongoing instruction on pedestrian safety.

About half of fatalities to “kids” are between the ages of 13 through 19 (odd that they include age 18-19 as children as this category is normally those under age 18), and most occur between 6pm and 9pm – not during school hours.

I was walking or riding my bike to school by at age 6, and probably when I was in kindergarten but I no longer remember the details.
