Food services made up less than a quarter of consumer food expenditures in the 1950s; they passed 46% for the first time in October and seem destined to become the majority of US food spending before long.

“Food away from home” accounted for 53.2% of US household food spending in 2022, the USDA estimates, up from 48.3% in 2020 and 43% in 1997.

Yet every day you can find news reports telling us that everyone is unable to afford anything, due to inflation, and that “food insecurity” is widespread.

Yet here some of us are, still cooking nearly all of our own meals, every day. And I do about 90% of the cooking in the house, not my wife.

We just we got back from a vacation trip – we typically bought sandwiches or salads at grocery stores rather than eat out at restaurants.
