All countries need new social and economic policies to prepare for the reality of an aging world now, the United Nations said in a new report on Thursday.

With fertility rates having collapsed (long ago in many countries), we are now facing the aging of the post World War II “baby boom” as life spans are longer.

It’s a double whammy – our economic systems have been based on the “pyramid model” of population, where each new generation is larger than its predecessor. Now, our newest generation is smaller – just as the post WW II population boom enters old age. We don’t have systems in place to accommodate this.
