Head injuries are a low probability but very high-risk event when bicycling or motorcycling or even skateboarding. Much is made of the story about the Attorney who fought Florida helmet laws died in motorcycle crash while not wearing one

Blunt force head trauma was listed as cause of death in the above crash.

I fractured my skull in a bicycling accident before bicycle helmets existed. About 20 or so years later, while wearing a Bell bicycle helmet, I had two separate bicycle crashes that broke my helmet, knocked me out, and broke other bones. In the third bike crash (my 4th head injury, unfortunately) I believe the helmet saved my life and I would not be here today except for that helmet.

Please consider wearing a helmet appropriate for your activity (cycling, motorcycling, skateboarding, downhill skiing) as needed.

Afterward: 2 weeks ago I stopped by a medical office for a routine blood test. As I pulled into the parking lot, a young adult tried to hop the curb with his bike and went flying / sliding about 15 feet into the asphalt about 20 feet in front of me. He was not wearing a helmet, but fortunately, did not make head contact. He was shook up by the experience. You never know when a crash may occur.
