April 2019:

Global warming has caused such extensive damage to the Great Barrier Reef that scientists say its coral may never recover. According to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, baby coral in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef have declined by 89% due to mass bleaching in 2016 and 2017.

August 2022:

Two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia recorded the highest amount of coral cover in nearly four decades, though the reef is still vulnerable to climate change and mass bleaching, a monitoring group said Thursday.

The spin is that it’s still going to bad, even if our past projections were wrong.

Predictions about the future regarding climate and Covid both seem to be habitually off in space.

Update – some of the research that claimed fisheries devastation (other than the Great Barrier Reef) due to climate change was retracted today by Science. The scientist’s lawyer says the female scientist was targeted by male colleagues who committed harassment. Science is pretty ugly. As seen on Twitter, name calling and trashing colleagues has become the norm, at least in the Twitterverse. These unprofessional behaviors lead to a loss of stature by the scientific community.
