You now have to be rich to ski in Tahoe (sfgate.com)

Lift tickets in California run about $150 to $300/day (less mid-week), parking costs $20 to $40 per day, and for many, there is also equipment rental, food and other expenses. Most large ski areas are owned by just two corporations.

Cross country ski resort Royal Gorge (also known as Royal Gouge…:) ) charges $25 to $50 per person per day for a day pass. (There are other places that one can cross country ski in the national forest or national park at lower prices, typically for parking.)

Only about 4% of the U.S. population goes downhill skiing (about 1-2% do cross country skiing). It’s a pretty small sport, and a shrinking one at that.

Obviously, infants do not ski, but children do participate in skiing so a reference to the total population of the U.S. is not that far off target. Another item says just 6% of Gen Z did either downhill or cross-country skiing in 2021.
