The cognitive disconnect in this story is amazing:

As of last month, the Canadian government says more than 6,000 U.S. H-1B visa holders had arrived in Canada so far this year. That’s after massive layoffs left high-skilled foreign H-1B holders in limbo.

Why the U.S. has lost thousands of high-skilled workers to Canada (cnbc.com)

The H-1B visa is a temporary employer visa to hire certain skilled workers from other countries. Most of the visas go to software developers from India. The original purpose for the visa was to address an alleged tech worker shortage in the U.S.

However, large layoffs in the tech sector have created a bit of a surplus of workers. Hence, they are no longer needed in U.S. jobs. That’s bad for the imported workers but the reality of the U.S. tech job market now.

Not surprisingly, without a job, they need to leave the U.S.

6,000, the story says, have taken advantage of a Canada program to go work there instead. Canada has a demographic fertility rate collapse like the U.S. and other countries, and has a very aggressive program to import immigrants from abroad. It is probably one of the most aggressive immigrant programs in the world.
