That is about 38% of all U.S. adults:

An estimated 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, according to new statistics from the American Heart Association.

It is likely that many of them could bring their blood pressure down by eliminating caffeine from their diets.

But the AHA, and other public health entities downplay the role caffeine plays by limiting this advice to those having a BP > 160/100:

People with severely high blood pressure who drink two or more cups of caffeinated coffee each day could double their risk of dying from a heart attack, stroke or other type of cardiovascular disease, new research finds. But drinking green tea or just one cup of coffee did not have the same effect.

They define “severe” as > 160/100.

Most of us read these reports and say, heck, I don’t have severely high blood pressure, therefore, I can keep drinking coffee!

My doctor’s evidence-based guidelines for my BP were to give a higher dose of blood pressure medication. After ending coffee, my BP is often in the 105/75 range now – down from, at one time, 150/90 . The BP medication doesn’t lower BP by very much – which means the majority of that lowering was due to caffeine reduction and lifestyle issues.
