To enable a broader transition from ownership to usership, the way we design things and systems need to change too. For example, car sharing is made possible by new keyless unlocking features. Similarly, user profiles that create a distinction for work and personal use on the same device is needed to reduce the number of devices per person. A design process that focuses on fulfilling the underlying need instead of designing for product purchasing is fundamental to this transition. This is the mindset needed to redesign cities to reduce private vehicles and other usages.

The goal is a world where we own little but rent only when we need goods or services.
Of course, the “landlords” will continue to own things and get rich by renting to others. Too bad about the plebians.
This is also sometimes referred to as the “subscription model”. Many no longer “own” rights to software on their computer but now must pay an annual subscription fee for access to the software, which often may be the only way to access the data that you personally own. Some want to disband with ownership of computers too – everything becomes a cloud-connected access device. Thus, you won’t even own your computer, much as few people own their cable modem – but rent by the month.
The goal is a society where everyone is a renter – for everything.
Your home should be rented. You should not have a washer and dryer – but should use a shared community washer and dryer. You should not have a lawn mower – but should pay a rental fee to use a community mower.
You should not own a car – but should rent one only when needed. You should not live anywhere that requires personal vehicle access unless necessary for your work – otherwise you should live in high rise housing and use public transit. Per other work, if you wish to travel via fee per mile roadways or toll roads, and definitely if you must fly somewhere, you should make application to the government with full justification for why you must fly – only approved reasons will be permitted (this has been seriously proposed).
This is the future the elite have in mind. It’s not even a conspiracy theory anymore. Geesh.
